A Federation of spirtual eco-communities open to the world
Recognized by the UN as a model for a sustainable society
In 2005, Damanhur was recognized by the Global Human Settlements Forum of the United Nations (UN) with the Award for Sustainable Communities. This honor was received in Shen-Zhen, China, by Bisonte Quercia (Antonio Nigro), a Damanhur citizen who was the mayor of Vidracco, Italy at the time. Vidracco is a town near Damanhur that is led by a Damanhurian council.
The Global Settlement Forum award states: We are pleased to inform you that Damanhur has been chosen to receive our 2005 Award for Sustainable Communities. Founded in the early 1970s, Damanhur, Federation of Communities, in Italy is now an internationally recognized center for artistic, ecological, spiritual and social research. Damanhur is an eco-society, a federation of communities and eco-villages composed of 20 small communities. A special characteristic is its connection with the neighboring cities and villages... Damanhur has a well organized system of economy and commerce, technological ability in the use of renewable energies; it constructs ecologically built dwellings and dedicates great attention to education.
