What does participation in the New Life program mean?

It means to live with us as a citizen of Damanhur. Three months of temporary citizenship will help you to better understand Damanhur through active participation in social life, volunteer work in the communities, learning Damanhurian philosophy, and more. The Path to Spiritual Freedom with instructors of the School of Meditation, visits to different regions of Damanhur, meetings with the founders and with Damanhurians, Italian lessons... these are just some of the activities that you can experience here. The New Life program is a journey to a new land and also a journey within you as well.

Do I have to speak Italian to be able to participate?

No, it is not necessary to speak Italian. All programs are translated into English. If you do speak Italian, it will help, of course, especially in your nucleo community home, where most citizens speak the native language. Italian lessons are offered free of charge to New Life participants on a weekly basis. So, while in Rome ... (well, you know how the saying goes!)

Is there a cost?

Damanhur is a community where everyone contributes in an active way. Based on this principle, we ask New Life citizens to be autonomous from an economic point of view, able to support themselves during their stay. This means contributing to the basic costs of community life - food, rent, shared housing costs (heating, water, electricity, etc.) - and program costs.

Can I sign up for a work exchange program in order to pay my living expenses while in the New Life program?

Unfortunately, this is not an option. Since New Life temporary citizenship is a full-immersion experience, there is not much time to dedicate to work exchange. New Life participants are asked to come to Damanhur with the ability to be self-supporting for three months. If you are interested only in work exchange, check out our WWOOFing program.

Do I need a Visa?

Damanhur is part of Italy and is subject to its laws. All non-European Union (EU) citizens are expected to be familiar with the rules and have the appropriate visas and documents secured in advance. If you are not an EU citizen, it is typically easy to obtain a three-month tourist visa. If you would like to stay longer than three months and you are not a European citizen, you will need to obtain the appropriate visa or a green card.

Is the New Life program suitable for parents with children?

The temporary citizen program is very demanding, so if you have small children, you may find it to be challenging to fully participate. We advise parents with small children to come and visit Damanhur as guests instead of doing the New Life program. For school-age children, it is preferable to come during school vacations, so as to maintain continuity for their education. The expenses (lodging and school) for children is to be sustained by the parents.

Can I bring my pet?

We understand that pets are like family members, but we ask that you come to New Life without them. When the New Life Program first launched, we welcomed dogs and cats but, in most cases, found it to be a troublesome experience for both pet owners and the nucleo community families.

Who is not eligible for New Life program?

Persons with pending criminal proceedings or felony convictions in Italy or abroad; persons with mental illness or emotional instability; minors under 18 years of age and those who do not have the funds to sustain one's basic living costs for three months.

Can I smoke at Damanhur?

Smoking is prohibited within all Damanhurian territories for everyone, including guests. It is the only ban stated in the Constitution of Damanhur. This no-smoking policy has been in place since 1975, when the founders chose this as an exercise of self-discipline and to promote consideration not just for oneself, but for the others and the environment. On an individual level, Damanhurians make the conscious decision to not smoke (which they view as an ephemeral pleasure) in favor of maintaining good psycho-physical health. Abstinence from smoking is a perfect reminder of the importance of refining one's self-control and avoiding excessive behavior of any kind. We also have a no-drug policy, and excessive use of alcohol is not permissible. Anyone who cannot respect this criteria will be asked to leave Damanhur.

Where do New Life participants typically come from?

People from all over the world come to Damanhur for the New Life experience: Australia, Japan, Canada, United States, Brazil, Argentina, Israel, Iceland, United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, Spain, South Africa, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Russia, Estonia, Austria...and more are coming every day!

What lessons are included during New Life program?

The first month is mostly dedicated to getting to know Damanhur - the history, principles, organization, community lands and activities - while the two successive months deepen exploration of the spiritual philosophy, through the Path to Spiritual Freedom sessions.
For the entire duration of the program, lessons are held on topics such as the Synchronic Lines, Atlantis, Spiritual Physics, Inner Harmonization, the spiritual Quesiti, Sacred Language and many other fascinating topics. Lessons are typically offered in Italian and translated into English. Remember that Italian classes of different levels are offered every week as well.
