But what is daily life like in a Damanhurian nucleo-community? How do around twenty or so people of different ages, culture and habits manage to live together in harmony for a long time?

Of course there are no standard answers and every individual and every family has in front of them a path of research to find the optimum balances, which permit not only living together in a harmonious and pleasant manner, meeting the needs of everyone, but is also an experience of growth through sharing with the others. In thirty years of existence, the Damanhurians have had the opportunity to explore these themes in great depth and, beyond the differences of each individual case, have managed to identify the following common ingredients:

  • CHOICE OF NUCLEO-COMMUNITY according to one’s own affinity with the family, the place to live and its projects.
  • PERSONAL SPACE suited to everyone’s needs.
  • LARGE COMMUNAL SPACES for meetings and activities.
  • CHOICE OF A COMMON GOAL, linked to improving the territory, the house and the quality of life.
  • SHARING TASKS to look after the small children, cook, clean the house and take care of the territory.
  •  ACTIVELY TAKING PART in bringing up the children, taking care of them and their well-being.
  •  GROUP SPIRIT AND A SENSE OF HUMOUR to get through difficult personal or family moments with a smile.
  • KINDNESS listening and showing respect for the needs and the space of others.
  • SHARING ONE’S OWN TALENTS and experiences through actively taking part in family life.
  • INNER OPENESS TO CHANGING ONESELF, allowing the others to be a mirror for one’s own strong and weak points.
  • ADAPTABILITY TO CHANGES, for example when the family welcomes a newborn, if new members arrive or if others leave for other family nucleos.
  • SHARING MOMENTS OF MEETING where one gives and receives support and personal confirmation, makes decisions and develops projects.
  • SHARING THE EXPENSESof rent, maintenance, management and eventual improvement of the house and the territory.
  • ELECTIONS, every year, of one or more heads of groups, who meet regularly with other heads of families and with the representatives of the other Damanhurian organisations to decide communal politics and treasure one another’s experiences, ensuring the cohesion of the whole community
