Damanhur was founded to realise a dream, the dream of a society based upon optimism and on the fact that human beings could be the masters of their own destiny without having to depend on other forces outside of themselves. This was the vision of Oberto Airaudi when, with a group of researcher friends, he started the spiritual, human and social experience of Damanhur. Today, in accordance the custom of the citizens of the Federation to take on animal names, Oberto also uses the name of Falco.
Born in Balangero, Turin, in 1950, Oberto, right since childhood, has had a clear spiritual vision and healing abilities, which he immediately undertook to develop through constant, demanding experimentation outside of the classic academic institutions. His spiritual and personal growth has continued over the years through study, research travels, the re-awakening of memories, the development of artistic abilities and the rediscovery of ancient knowledge.
Philosopher, healer, writer and painter, in 1975, in order to present in public the results of his research and to start up a more intense phase of experimentation, he founded in Turin the Horus Centre which was to give rise to Damanhur, of which Falco is still today the Spiritual Guide. Hildur Jackson, one of the founders of GEN (Global Ecovillages Network), in ‘Ecovillage Living - Restoring the Earth and Her People’ writes: " Falco (Oberto Airaudi) is a researcher and an innovator who believes in the law of change. He is not so much a leader as a kind, very talented person who shares his innovative ideas with the community which acknowledges him as its valid guide.”
The path proposed by Oberto Airaudi leads to the re-awakening of each person’s Inner Master, through study, experimentation, the full expression of individual potential and the overcoming of every dogmatic attitude. At the basis of this thought there is the conviction that every human being partakes in a divine nature to be re-awoken within oneself, through constant and continual interaction with others. As a result, Damanhur is a society in continual evolution and transformation, based upon the exaltation of differences and whose social, political and philosophical system is always becoming something new and which can only be interpreted over time. ![]() Massimo Introvigne, one of the most eminent sociologists of religions in the world and director of CESNUR (Centre for the Study of New Religions), in an interview for the British company ‘Amora’, says: "Damanhur is one of the most prominent spiritual community groups in the world and I think that it is linked to the tradition of the ‘Ancient Wisdom Movements’ yet, from another point of view, it is a completely new reality. I think that the founder, Oberto Airaudi, has managed to create something truly new whose success is supported by the fact that this experience has kept on going much longer than even the best expectations of sociologists. The stability of Damanhur is rather unusual and exceptional and this goes against several theories which say that this type of community will work only for a few years in the post-modern world. Perhaps the theories should be reviewed in the light of the experience of Damanhur. Damanhur is large enough to be able to make us reconsider these theories because it is not a question of a group of 20 people living together – it might be an exception in this case – but we are talking about over 600 people."
Always a reserved person, little inclined to promote his own image, Falco does not have a decision making role within the political and social structure of Damanhur, which is managed by elected bodies, but he is available to collaborate with the Guides elected by the citizens and with those responsible for the organisations of the Federation.Falco is very active in the field of therapeutic, artistic and new sciences research. |
