Due to all their differences, our personalities give different interpretations of reality, even though they are looking at the same object. As two people looking at the same object see it in a different way, so do the different personalities inside us perceive differently. Let’s imagine two people looking at a bottle. Person number 1 has a professional interest in it, since he produces bottles, while person number 2 links the bottle to the pleasure of drinking. There is of course a great difference in the way these two people perceive the same bottle! Exactly the same happens to our personalities when facing the same situation. Each personality inside us has its own education, its own memories and sees reality through its own specific thoughts and feelings, as if it actually were a different person, compared to the others. With a little training we can discover that while we are observing reality, ‘behind’ us are many personalities that are looking out at the same time. It is as if each personality looked through its own filter, with its own specific way of feeling and its ability to observe. The personality with free will corresponds to the part of us which is most awake and aware of what is happening in that particular moment. When using free will, one should be able to involve all personalities at the same time. If an important choice is made by just one personality, when they turn around in guiding us, doubts and perplexities might in fact appear. If, on the other hand, the emotion was intense enough, it becomes easier for all the personalities to share the decision. The same mechanism is at work when different human beings communicate with each other. When a human group creates intense emotional situations, for example during a theatre show, it is emotion which opens the channels and allows communication by increasing the level of sensation. When playing music, the important thing is not the single note, but the fact that every single note is intertwined with all the others; if one single note is played out of key, the entire piece of music is ruined. Also pauses are important: None of our personalities is unimportant or useless. Unfortunately, normally we do not exploit fully our normal characteristics, because we have not learned how to train our personalities to rotate. They are even often in contrast with each other; some of them attack the dominant personality in order to achieve more control over our body or parts of our mind. So many of our energies are wasted just trying to keep an apparent mental balance. If we learn how to handle these forces, we should be able to orient them in the same direction. The more we succeed in collaborating with all our parts, the better we feel; we can become happier, healthier and more creative. |
